Filtered Lives

Social media has been a huge part of our lives, more than we'd like to admit. For most of us at least, the first thing we do as soon as we open our eyes in the morning is reach out for our phones, and scroll through social media platforms like instagram, twitter, whatsapp, and such. When our food arrives to our tables, we take out our phones to snap a picture before actually taking a bite. To be honest, these days, it no longer matters if the food is good or is sub par, what matters is that its pretty and worthy for the gram.

Even made another instagram account dedicated to food pictures hehe. While we’re at that, y’all should follow it, just saying:P #shamelessselfpromowhoops

On a serious note though, indeed, social media might have made our lives a little less miserable, as we are now able to stay in touch with our family or friends on a daily basis, regardless of the distance in between, and networking is also made easier. Social media also allows us to be more broad-minded as we now have access to different ideas and knowledge from all over the world and everything can be done through our fingertips. Just like everything else though, it does not escape from having its own cons. It all depends on the way we use it.

Social media creates pressure. Scrolling through our feeds, we always see someone prettier than us, someone more fashionable than us, or someone who lives a more "perfect" life than us. This creates insecurities, which sadly affects people's self esteems and in a way, it makes us become ungrateful of what we have. But one thing we tend to forget here is that people show what they want to show on social media. Just like most of us, our instagram feed is filled with our happy days, pictures of us smiling, pictures with friends, but rarely ever the negative parts, our struggles.

Also something that really bothers me is the fact that people tend to judge your life based off what they see on social media. Some people need to understand that anything that is posted online does not portray one's life. Someone may be smiling and laughing on Instagram but they could be struggling with a life crisis without you knowing. I have seen this happen myself, someone who everyone thought was a happy-go-lucky girl ended up taking her own life due to depression. No one had a clue, not even her own best friend or family.

Although its already 2019, a lot of people sadly still live by "if there's no photo posted, did it really even happen?". And just because someone does not find the need to post an update of their every move, does not mean there is nothing going on in their life. Just because someone updates their Instastories with pictures or videos of them partying everyday, it does not mean that they don't have time allocated to study.  Just because your every social media update is of you studying, it does not make you better than others. Life shouldn't be a competition.

You see, I do take pleasure in posting bits of my life on the internet to share with my mutuals, but some things I prefer to keep private. Anyways, my point is that to some of us at least, our lives does not only revolve around social media. There is nothing wrong if you're someone who chooses to document your life on your social media accounts, but at the end of the day we all are different, and choose to handle things differently.
